Theme and Variations on "The Gobby-O" for Solo Piano
Theme and Variations on "The Gobby-O" for Solo Piano are based on the traditional Irish tune that was very popular in Colonial America. "The Gobby-O" became the tune to one of Thomas Jefferson’s Presidential campaign songs in the election year of 1800. With lyrics by the Scottish-born ornithologist, poet and painter Alexander Wilson, the campaign song was known as “Jefferson and Liberty.”
Theme and Variations on "The Gobby-O" consist of a theme and seven variations. The variations provide contrasts in meter, tempo, style and mood.
The work is dedicated to the Steinway Artist, Susan Merdinger, who is planning on giving the World Premiere performance in 2027. After the world premiere, Theme and Variations on “The Gobby-O” will be published by Universal Edition.
